Palácio do Correio-Mor, Loures
palaciodocorreiomor.wordpress.com
This imposing eighteenth-century palace, classified as a Property of Public Interest, was built by Luís Gomes de Elvas Coronel on the land that he acquired during this period from the Convent of Odivelas. It then changes its nickname to "da Matta" due to the beautiful and rich forest on the property. Thanks to the "good deeds" practiced during the reign of Philip II of Portugal, he was assigned the rank of Correio-Mor, a senior post at that time, who was responsible for administering all postal services, and determining the property - Palace of the Correio-Mor.
The building will have been designed by the Italian architect António Canevari. On the ground floor are the coach house, the stables, the winery, the press and the magnificent old kitchen, covered with tiles with separate figures, where they appear represented hunting pieces, fish and sausages. In the center of the pink facade stands two high arches for the entrance and exit of carriages, among which there is a graceful drinking fountain for horses. In the upper part of the facade you can see the image of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira.
Going up the central staircase, we find the Fountain of the Good Samaritan [Fonte da Boa Samaritana] and a medallion held by a winged boy, perhaps representing the ninth Post Office. In the Noble floor the rooms are decorated majestically and exuberantly, where cohabit tiles, paintings and stuccoes in the most perfect harmony. The monochromatic tiles belonging to Bartolomeu Antunes' workshop depict different histories: the life of the owner of the Palace - Luís Gomes da Matta - or representations of Lisbon prior to the earthquake of 1755. The beauty of the polychrome tiles results from their various phytomorphic and and its shell shape - vases and bouquets of flowers, provide an exceptional visual symphony. The ceilings, rich in their stucco moldings, are filled with vegetative motifs and framed with banners raised by angels, harmoniously combine with mythological figurations. In this group, the impressive panels of the Hunting Room where the Metamorphoses by Ovídeo are represented.
In the outer space we find the Mediterranean Forest, the waterfalls, the boxwood gardens punctuated with small sculptures and the large tank whose tiles lead us back to the Metamorphoses by Ovídeo.
